Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and VEP MSHA ED Inc. Reach Agreement – Updated August 18, 2015

As part of our commitment to help keep you informed of any change in the status of our ongoing contracting efforts with emergency medicine groups in the western region of Virginia, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and affiliate HealthKeepers, Inc. are announcing an important update.  While VEP MSHA ED Inc. terminated contracts with us on January 1, 2015, the emergency medicine group has rejoined our networks effective August 17, 2015, participating in networks for our PPO, Anthem HealthKeepers, Anthem HealthKeepers Plus (Medicaid/FAMIS) and Medicare Advantage health plans.  In addition, VEP MSHA ED Inc. will participate in provider networks supporting our individual and small group health plans that members have purchased on or off the Health Insurance Marketplace (also called the exchange).

All parties collaborated in order to arrive at a mutual agreement, and a contractual framework has been developed for a continued business relationship with VEP MSHA ED Inc.  This is an important health care partnership for the southwest Virginia area, as VEP MSHA ED Inc. provides emergency medicine services at Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon, Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion and Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

For more than 75 years, Anthem has been pleased to provide a range of health insurance products to those who live in and work in Virginia.  As the state’s largest health insurer and a major local employer, we take very seriously our responsibility to provide our members with access to affordable health care and the broadest possible network of health care providers.
