Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Yale Medicine Reach Agreement

Commit to broaden value-based arrangement, create tighter integration and enhance care coordination

WALLINGFORD and NEW HAVEN (October 5, 2016) — Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Yale Medicine announced today that they have reached a multi-year agreement on the renewal of their contract. As a result, covered services provided by Yale Medicine providers to Anthem members will remain in-network without interruption. Per the agreement of both parties, terms of the contracts will not be released.

Under the new agreement, Yale Medicine and Anthem will broaden their relationship by implementing new approaches to managing cost and quality that provide incremental value to our mutual constituents. Our arrangement will create a tighter integration that will promote more proactive and coordinated management of Yale Medicine's patients across the care continuum.

"We are pleased our members will continue to have access to Yale Medicine's providers," said Jill R. Hummel, president, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. "We are particularly excited by this new arrangement because of its focus on patient centered care and value based payment. This collaboration presents an excellent opportunity for Anthem and Yale Medicine to work together to improve patient health and outcomes while reducing the costs associated with avoidable admissions and services. When providers are given the tools and resources they need to focus on prevention, wellness and the coordination of care, and are rewarded when they improve health, it's a recipe for success."

"Yale Medicine's renewed relationship with Anthem enables us to improve the health of the communities we serve by providing convenient access to high-quality care," said Paul Taheri, Chief Executive Officer of Yale Medicine. We look forward to providing the highest level of services, the most talented providers, and the best facilities for the future. We welcome the opportunity to continue working with Anthem to transform healthcare."

Throughout the negotiations, both organizations remained focused on the commitment to doing what is best for patients. With this new calibrated contract in place, Yale Medicine and Anthem can continue growing its commitment to collaborative value-based programs that reduce the rising costs of healthcare, while providing the transparency needed to give our communities the confidence to choose a health plan and provider that have the patients' interest as top of mind.
